We spend more time with our smartphones than with anyone/anything else. We are also becoming increasingly more interested in quantifying our lives. This combination creates a great opportunity for researchers to collect incidental data in real time. While big data is great for helping us understand people and trends in general, incidental data is invaluable for aiding us in examining what people do on a daily basis that makes a difference; how minor activities that we often forget lead to significant outcomes. Hence, we are working on a cross-platform mobile application that allows for a number of different sampling strategies and intervention studies that do not require additional devices, easily integrate into people’s lives, and collect and store data in an ethical manner.
