How do we create engaging learning experiences for diverse learners?

Speak Out is a collaborative initiative with Business in the Community that aims to open up new doors for new students in a way that creates a diverse and inclusive university community, while enhancing employability. Speak Out is a programme that matches pupils from local schools with third-year management students and business mentors from Irwin Mitchell, SIG, Carillion, DLA Piper, Veolia, and Lloyds Banking Group to create projects for positive social change in their communities. This engaging learning opportunity supports pupils from local schools, who are traditionally less likely to participate in higher education, to gain new and valuable enterprise and transferable skills, while introducing them to positive role models from the worlds of higher education and business. At the same time, the initiative provides third-year undergraduate students with opportunities to learn from and with external partners. It enables them to apply their academic knowledge and skills to real-world challenges in a way that promotes active citizenship and sustainability. Additionally, through the direct contact with business mentors, the initiative enhances students’ employability by increasing their social capital and demonstrating their knowledge and skills to potential employers.
